Back to Zagreb, We Go

After a wonderful time in Plitvice, it was time to head back to Zagreb for a night.  But first, we had breakfast at the hotel, and I can't remember if I've mentioned this (apologies if I have), but Croatian breakfast is a little odd.  They serve you what they call sausage, and they are legitimately room temperature hot dogs.  They also served bologna, and some kind of meat paste that you squeeze out of a tube.  It comes in many different meat varieties...yes, it was as nasty as it sounds.  Oh, and grainy bread and sheep cheese.  Which were actually two of my favorite things.  But anyway, after breakfast, we caught the bus back to Zagreb.

Upon arrival, we attempted to get a taxi, and we did.  But as he was putting our bags into the car, another man with other passengers looking for a taxi came up to him and started shouting and tried to pull out our bags.  Its was all in Croatian, so I have no idea what they were saying, but it was weird.  Anyway, those people went to a different cab, we got settled into ours and were getting ready to drive off, and then a different man comes up to the window and leans in to shout at our driver.  They have another shouting match, and then window guy slaps our driver as he drives off.  Still not really sure what happened, but it was interesting nonetheless.

After getting settled back into the hotel, we called our driver friend Niko to take us to the mall.  Because allow me, for a moment, to gush over the exchange rates in Croatia.  Ok...that was less of a gush and more of a statement, but suffice it to say, it was glorious.  During this excursion, that picture happened -->
Apparently, he was hungry and I was taking too long, but I think he was probably just being dramatic.  Regardless, I put him out of his misery and we went to town to find food.  We ate at a place called Good Food, but the food was actually not that good...we were extremely mislead.

After "Good Food", we adventured around the town and found the Archeological Museum.  It was closed, but there was a walkway area that led to an outdoor cafe and it was lined with statues that looked like this.  I blurred it out in case children or my grandparents see it..but these men were missing their penises...peni?...penises.  Not important.  Anyway, I have a theory of how these men and their missing appendages are linked to the art museum with the gigantic golden penis statues.  The artist was clearly so distraught over the loss of their limbs, that he may have overcompensated.  I realize that's probably not true, but it's just an idea.

Zagreb was beautiful, and full of beautiful buildings such as the Zagreb Art Pavillion:
After sitting in this park for a while, it was time for more food.  So on the way to find food, we stopped for baclava...and ice cream...maybe more than once, I can't even remember at this point.  We ate at this hole in the wall Mediterranean restaurant, I can't remember the name of it, but there was a ton of food and it was delicious.  If you ever go to Zagreb, go to the main square, there will be stairs on the left side of a the row of building below...go up those stairs and you will find it.  You will not be disappointed.  Well, you might.  We could have just been hungry, who knows.

Most people know that I hate those people who standing the sidewalks and chase after you with fliers for clubs, drink discounts, really anything...if I want your flier, I will ask for it.  But that's beside the point.  In the main square, Ban Jelačić Square, there were all these girls handing out fliers to the "Zagreb Eye"...I was kind of hoping it was a ferris wheel because I'm terrified of them and they say you should do one thing a day that scares you...but it was just an elevator ride to the very top of one of the tallest buildings in the square.  There was an observation deck and you could see the entire city, according to them it was supposed to be super romantic and seal true love, or something.  I can't really remember, I was kind of distracted by being so high up in the open air. Although, I don't know if it can still claim to seal true love after three years, or if it was more of a first date kind of thing, but I guess we'll see.  However, it was lovely, offered a lovely view, and we had a lovely time.

After the elevator back to the ground, we walked around Zagreb one last time because the next morning we had to catch a flight to Split!  Which is an amazing city, by the way, but I'll save that for a different post.

Side note:  When Niko dropped us at the mall, he told us to call him when we were ready to go home and he would come and get us.  We never called him, we just got a grumpy old man to drive us back to the hotel...I feel bad about that.  Niko probably hates us now.  I'm kind of upset about that a little bit, not gonna lie.
