And On the Last Day, We Drove Up a One-Lane Billy Goat Path
You guys. I'm about to document our last full day in Croatia and it's kind of bumming me out, I won't lie. But the show must go on! (Yes, I have been watching Moulin Rouge again, and yes, I did sing that in my head.)
We also decided to have a picnic with grainy bread and sheep cheese. Because it's the most delicious meal EVER. I also spilled yogurt all over the store floor...so that was embarrassing...moving on!
We had the rental car for most of the day so we decided to drive up to Mount Srđ. At the top is a fort
that was home of one of the fiercest battles in the Croatian War of Independence from 1991-1995 (according to Wikipedia, but we all know about Wikipedia). It was pretty cool, there is a cable car that we could have taken to the top, but 1) I do not trust giant enclosed cars on wires (death machines) and 2) why do that when you can have a driving adventure?! My travel books told me that the most beautiful views in Dubrovnik can be found on top of this mountain, so, skipping it wasn't an option.
To get to the top, and to get to where this picture was taken, we (Prash) had to drive up a one lane road with little pull-off areas for when another car decided to drive in the opposite direction. But anyway! It was pretty scary stuff what with the steepness, and the turns, and the other cars, but we made it to the top!
Apparently from the top, you can see three countries, Croatia (duh), Bosnia, and Montenegro.
Plus, it's just really pretty. So that's a bonus.

We get to the top and enjoy this view for a few minutes and then climb some stairs to the giant cross! I feel like it's the Croatian version of Jesus in Rio, but I'm also very sure that I'm completely wrong. Prash wanted to take a picture with said cross. I asked if it was because of his new Jesus ring from the Christmas store, but apparently it's just because it's a monument and he's Indian. I didn't know that was a thing. But I guess you learn something new every day!
Behind the cross was one of the most amazing views I have ever seen. I have to keep rambling for a bit before I can post it because I haven't really figured out the whole "photo positioning thing", but know that it's coming!
The Mister was really into climbing things that day, I'm pretty sure he would have climbed on that were there no barricades. Just kidding, kind of.
Okay, for the view!
Okay, it needs to be said again, I love Dubrovnik. There were a lot of couples at the overlook, I can't ever imagine why.
I want to post these photos to prove that he is in fact a goat who climbs on rocky cliffs, but also because Dubrovnik is amazing and it felt like we were both on top, and the edge of the world. Just like in Titanic. Ask me how many times I referenced Titanic whilst on top of the world. Actually, don't. I have no idea. Lets just acknowledge that it was a lot and move on.
After this view, we climbed up the mountain a little ways more to the fort! Because forts are cool. Okay, I really just wanted to climb on top of the fort and you had to pay for a museum tour to get to the top. So, that happened. It was awesome. It was full of guns and interesting facts about the city and the war. Although, I can't really remember any of them right now. I blame it on the lack of coffee today. Or my tendency to forget things...it's probably more that one.
After seeing all the sights, we had a picnic overlooking three countries. Because we are just that cool. After we drove back down the mountain (cliff), we went back inside the old town one last time for ice cream (why else would we go there). There was an advertisement for "frozen water", which I really wanted
because I was parched...it turns out it wasn't frozen at all, it was just cold water from a cooler. Yep, way to lie Dubrovnik. We stopped by the Taj Mahal for Bosnian food, and it was delicious. So good. Seriously, I want Bosnian food right now (I talk about food a lot).
We had to take the car back to the sweaty Croatian man, so we spent the last evening in Štikovica. It was quiet, but nice. Well, mostly nice. We went to the restaurant behind our hotel and the waitress had some serious issues with Americans. She was not excited to be serving me. I was even being nice. The pizza was also not so great. Anyway, that was our last full day in Croatia, and yes I do want to go back.
Stay tuned for when I tell you about the time we went to the wine cave. Hah.

I could point to the different countries, but I would be wrong. Just know that they are all in there...somewhere. |
