We're on a Boat! Again. For the last time on this Adventure!
Being the nerd that I am, I did plenty of research before our trip. This included many google searches and may or may not have included two travel books...cover to cover...(side note: I liked Rick Steves Guidebook better than Nat Geo traveler...but NGT had pretty pictures...still not super informative...I'm getting distracted.) Anyway, I read somewhere that the best, most beautiful way to get from Split to Dubrovnik was by boat. So, we signed up...for an 11 hour ferry ride. I was sick so there were no pictures because I felt miserable, but just imagine the Split-Vis boat pictures, and you get the idea.
This was a very long and uncomfortable boat ride. If ever you plan to do so, get there before the sun comes up. Otherwise you will be below deck freezing, or outside in the blazing sun. We tried to be below deck, and for some reason I thought being outside would be better. The only available seats were backless benches in no shade. Prash slept under a table, I read a book on our bench. This went on for several hours. Then I'm pretty sure I almost had a heat stroke and passed out, so I had to go sit in the air conditioned hallway and read. Also, my jar of olives was finally empty...so that was very sad.
They also made us leave all of our luggage in a room below deck. I went down to get something from my bag and couldn't find my gigantic pink bag that Prash now curses. So I dug through luggage for a while and couldn't find it...there was also another gigantic pink bag so I immediately panicked that someone took mine. I then went to wake up Prash so he could go find it. He was gone for a very long time and I thought he also got kidnapped. But good news! He found my bag.
Eventually, the Mancub found seats indoors in a semi air conditioned room with windows to see out and life got a little bit better. In this room was an American flamboyant gay man who was vacationing with his partner. Let's just say I adored listening to him...because he was fantastic. Over the course of about the last 45 minutes of the trip, he drank an entire bottle of local red wine. He also acted as a tour guide to the islands we were passing while Prash was lost on the boat and I was sitting alone in a corner. He then tried to engage an Asian traveller in conversation...except the Asian man didn't speak much English. After about four glasses of wine, the American started speaking like people do in movies when interacting with foreigners...speaking slowly and over pronunciating. Maybe it was funnier in person.
We finally docked in Dubrovnik and found all of our luggage! While Prash was finding the luggage alone, an American girl decided she needed him to help her unload her luggage...He's popular amongst the American's for some reason...I can't figure it out (jokes). We got off the ship and found the man with the sign with our car.
This man was probably the sweatiest man I've ever seen in my life...I've seen some very sweaty men. This one had some serious boob sweat worse than any girl after running 12 miles. Not even kidding. It was like seeing a unicorn. He also couldn't work the GPS so we stood there in that hot parking lot for forever waiting for him to figure it out. He did not. Prash figured it out. Because I'm technologically challenged. The GPS was pretty nice. Except he always shouted "You are ovah the speed limit!" At Prash. In a fancy British accent. Because no one would listen if he was an American and wasn't Siri...people still don't listen to Siri.
We finally get to our home in Štikovica. Villa Ana is super nice with huge rooms and a nice man
named Mr. Boris who Prash had a man crush on. He will deny it, but he loved Mr. Boris. The room also had a great view. So, that's what we got to see every day. Not too shabby at all.
We were super tired but still went to the city center anyway...even though I told Prash where to go and he was convinced he was right and drove us past the city walls and halfway to the airport...I mean, what?...
Let me just take this opportunity to say that Dubrovnik has more stairs that I have ever seen in my life. Regardless of where you park, you will have to walk up or down 700 stairs. It's probably more like 300, but when you're tired it feels like 7.
After much debate we ended up beside this table of loud Americans. The guy would not stop talking about all of his worldly knowledge...He wasn't a tool, I promise. But anyway, somehow we started talking to them and we found out they were from Charlotte! Small world. Small world indeed.
After dinner, we climbed the stairs to find this bar I read about in my travel books called "buža", which really means "hole in the wall". Which is serious because you have to climb through a hole in the wall to get there. The bar itself hangs off the side of a cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the island of Lokrum. I would have liked to go back during the day, but we just didn't have time. Because we are busy and important people. Just kidding. But really, there was no time. The place served champagne in clear plastic cups, but the atmosphere made up for it. Plus, you get a work out with the stairs.
After we left, we explored the city a bit more and got some ice cream. It wouldn't have been a day in Croatia without ice cream at least twice. Dubrovnik is beautiful and probably my favorite city that we visited. Check it out. I already wrote this post once and half of it got deleted? I think I rewrote everything but I'm sure I missed something. Anyway, that's all for now! When I was trying to take a picture of this building some people photobombed it because they thought they were prettier. People should really stop underestimating my love for old churches with stained glass windows.
I have to move on now and get to the post about our exciting day of sea kayaking! Let me tell you. Get on the edge of your seats, because that is nonstop excitement (no not really)
Okay, I'm really done now. But I am leaving you with this beautiful picture of our first Dubrovnik sunset!

View from Villa Ana. Mr. Boris did well. |
